Bethlehem Steel FC Acquires Defender Jamoi Topey
March 1, 2019 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Philadelphia Union II News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - Bethlehem Steel FC announced today that the club has acquired defender Jamoi Topey (pronunciation: jah-MOY TOE-pee) via loan. A 19-year-old defender from Portmore, Jamaica, Topey becomes the 12th player on Steel FC's 2019 roster. The deal is pending league and federation approval. Topey will be added to the Steel's active roster following receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa.
"The addition of Jamoi to Steel is great for us" said Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner. "He provides height, comfort on the ball and a physicality that will be key for the club's backline this season. He is skilled at playing with both feet and his potential for development here is exciting."
Topey joins Steel FC from Cavalier SC of Jamaica's National Premier League. Topey played two seasons for Cavalier's first team, making 37 appearances and scoring three goals across both seasons. In 2017, he was key in Cavalier earning promotion back into Jamaica's top flight for the 2018 season. Topey also featured for Cavalier's youth squads.
"Topey has excellent size, which is easy to see, but his ability to play from the back is his best quality," said Steel FC Head Coach Brendan Burke. "At 19, we feel like he is just scratching the surface on the defensive side of the ball and we are looking forward to seeing how much progress can be made with a year of exposure to the USL Championship. He is a player that we feel will be able to compliment and push Ben Ofeimu's development stride for stride."
On the international stage, Topey featured for Jamaica's Under-20 National Team during the 2018 CONCACAF U-20 Championship. He started in all five of Jamaica's matches in the competition, scoring four goals and providing one assist, while playing every minute of the tournament for the island nation. Topey started in the matches against Grenada (November 3), Nicaragua (November 4), Mexico (November 7), Aruba (November 9) and St. Martin (November 10), scoring against every squad except Mexico and supplying an assist against Aruba. With his help, Jamaica secured three clean sheets in five matches and went undefeated in group play, falling just short of advancement to Mexico on goal differential.
