Bethea, Bishop are Can-Am's monthly best

DURHAM, NC--Nashua Pride DH Larry Bethea and North Shore Spirit RHP Matt Bishop have been selected as the SLAM Baseball Can-Am League Batter and Pitcher of the Month, respectively, for the month of August.
In 28 games for Nashua, Bethea hit .324 with eight home runs, 26 RBIs, five doubles, and 21 runs scored. The Pensacola, FL resident also had a .611 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .364. Bethea was traded to the Pride from the Pensacola Pelicans of the American Association on August 2nd. For the season with both Pensacola and Nashua, Bethea is batting .310 with 15 home runs, 62 RBIs, and 52 runs scored.
Bethea was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1995 draft. The 29-year-old has spent time with the Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organizations. However, Bethea has played the majority of his now 10-year career in the independent leagues. Last season with the Pensacola Pelicans, Bethea hit .267 with 21 HR, 76 RBIs, and 91 hits.
In six August appearances, Bishop went 5-1 with a minuscule ERA of 1.19 and collected 23 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings pitched. For the season, the resident of Raleigh, NC has a 6-1 record with a 1.74 ERA. He has struck out 30 batters in 46 2/3 innings pitched and opponents are only hitting .193 against him.
The 24-year-old was picked in the 17th round of the 2004 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bishop spent the last two seasons in the Pirates system, where in 2005 with the Hickory Crawdads of the South Atlantic League and Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League he accumulated a record of 3-9 with a 7.83 ERA and had 44 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched.
