Bernard's Hat Trick Highlights Odessa's 9-2 Win

(Amarillo, TX) - Kenny Bernard netted a second period hat trick as the Odessa Jackalopes topped the Amarillo Gorillas, 9-2, at the Amarillo Civic Center on Sunday. The nine-goal output tied a season high for the Jackalopes.

Bernard's hat trick was part of a five-goal second period as the Jackalopes opened up an 8-1 lead. Bernard scored goals at the :24, 7:51, and 15:42 marks of the period. It was the second hat trick of the season for the Jackalopes - both have come against the Gorillas. Garrett Gruenke and Sebastien Thinel scored the other second period goals for Odessa.

The Jacks controlled the first period of the game with physical play and three goals to start the game. Jean Bourbeau opened the scoring at 2:32. Kory Karlander made it a 2-0 lead for the Jackalopes less than four minutes later on a two-on-one with Dominic Leveille. Jeff Pierce then added a power play goal at 11:14 to give the Jacks the three-goal cushion on a loose puck in front of the net. The Gorillas found the board when Jason Beeman's wrister between the circles beat Juha Toivonen at 15:52. Odessa led 3-1 after the first.

Odessa's Brian Swiniarski and Amarillo's Andy Brennan each scored third period goals to make the score 9-2.

Juha Toivonen finished with 29 saves for the Jackalopes, who stay two points ahead of the Allen Americans for first place in the CHL's Southern Conference with a 17-4-3 record.

The Jackalopes continue their road trip on Wednesday in Prescott Valley, AZ against the Arizona Sundogs. Game time is set for 8:05 PM Central time and the action can be heard on 102.1 Jack FM.
