Benson Claims Third Player of the Week Honor

(Eastlake, OH) - The Midwest League and the Lake County Captains, Class-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, announced today that Captains outfielder Will Benson has been named the Midwest League Player of the Week for the third time this season and the second time in the last three weeks. Benson is the only player to win this award multiple times in 2019.
Benson was named the Midwest League Player of the Week for May 27-June 2 after hitting .409 (9-for-22) with four home runs across seven games. The Captains' outfielder and 2016 Indians first round draft pick compiled a .500 on base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. In addition to his four homers, Benson doubled, drove in eight runs, scored seven times, drew five walks and stole four bases.
Benson finished his week strong with home runs in both games of Sunday's doubleheader against the West Michigan Whitecaps. He hit a go-ahead solo homer to right field in the third inning of game one and tied game two with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Benson's twin blasts gave him 16 home runs on the season, enough to lead the Midwest League.
Prior to this week, Benson also earned the Midwest League Player of the Week award for April 15-21 and May 13-19. The 2018 Midwest League All-Star currently leads the league in home runs (16), runs batted in (45), slugging percentage (.611) and total bases (110). He is second in on base plus slugging percentage (.984), stolen bases (18) and runs scored (38). Benson is also third in the league in extra-base hits (27).
