Wachusett Dirt Dawgs News Release
WORCESTER, Mass - The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs and the Worcester Bravehearts met for the first time in league history on Friday. Located just 25 miles apart, this new rivalry has been called the I-190 Expressway series.
In the first game of the series, the Bravehearts took home the victory by a score of 2-1. The teams combined for a total of six hits in the game. The Bravehearts took the lead off an Ian Strom (UMass Lowell) solo home run. In a game that lacked hits, Strom's home run was the deciding factor. The Bravehearts also scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
The Dirt Dawgs were only able to manufacture four hits the entire game. They scored their only run in the sixth inning. Michael Rizzitello (Dowling College) hit a ball to the third baseman, Mark DeYoung (Judson University), who committed an error allowing Richard Fecteau (Salem State) to score. Mattingly Romanin (Chicago State) also added two hits.
One of the bright spots for the Dirt Dawgs was starting pitcher Ben White (College of the Holy Cross), who happened to be pitching on his home field. White went five innings while only allowing one hit and also striking out six.
The Dirt Dawgs travel to face the North Shore Navigators on June 7. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00. The Dirt Dawgs will send Connor Smith (The College of New Jersey) to the mound for them.
