
Ben Carries Wild Over Roadrunners

WENATCHEE, Wash. - BenCarey (Centennial, Colo.) scored two power-play goals and added an assistFriday to lead the Wenatchee Wild to a 4-1 victory over the Topeka RoadRunnersat the Town Toyota Center. The win was the Wild's third straight.
Topeka drew first blood in thecontest with 8:44 left in the first period. Brian Christie lit the light on abackhander after a few magnificent stickhandling moves. Richard Young assisted.The rest of the game belonged to the Wild.
Carey tied up the contest 1-1 alittle over a minute after Christie's opening marker during a power play. Careyscored on a backhand-to-forehand move on the doorstep after he received a tippass from Trace Redmond (McKinney,Texas) from the bottom of the near circle. JacobBarber (Dardenne Prairie, Mo.) earned the secondary assist.
The Wild scored twice in thesecond period to take a 3-1 lead. The first of those two goals, scored by Careyduring a man-advantage, came on a rebound from the backdoor four minutes intothe period. Barber and Redmond assisted on the go-ahead marker.
Redmond increased Wenatchee'slead to 3-1 with two minutes remaining in the second period when he scored a5-on-5 marker. Carey won a clean faceoff in the Topeka zone to Dylan Abood (Centennial, Colo.), whocranked a slap shot from the near point. Redmond cleaned up the rebound fromthe slot for his ninth goal of the season.
The Wild took a 3-goal lead 87seconds into the third stanza on their third power-play goal of the contest. Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) nettedthe goal from the slot on a pass from ChrisKerr (Penticton, British Columbia) from the end line. Max McHugh (Edgewood, Wash.) also assisted.
Robert Nichols (Dallas, Texas) denied 19 of Topeka's 20 shots tobetter his record to 18-5-3. Peter Traber made 22 saves on 26 shots for theRoadRunners.
Special teams play was a majorfactor in the game. Wenatchee went 3-for-8 on its power play chances whileTopeka went 0-for-4.
Carey, who leads his team with 21goals, scored two goals and added an assist (3 points) Friday. Redmond scored agoal and two assists for his first 3-point game of the season. Barber recordedtwo helpers to extend his point streak to four games.
Game 2 between the Wild (27-15-5)and RoadRunners (32-15-2) is set for 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
