Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Twenty-year-old defenseman James Hansen has used two seasons playing for the Waterloo Black Hawks to earn a hockey scholarship from Bemidji State University, where he will begin attending classes and skating next fall.

As a veteran this winter, Hansen is one of only three Hawks to have appeared in every Hawks game. He has recorded three goals and eight assists in 38 games, highlighted by a shorthanded breakaway goal on Thanksgiving against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. The 6'1" Maple Grove, Minnesota, native has a plus/minus rating of +3. As a USHL rookie in 2010-2011, Hansen's even plus/minus mark tied him for the team lead among fulltime players. In 47 games last season, he recorded a goal and seven assists.

"He's a steady defenseman.you know what you're going to get when he's on the ice," said Black Hawks head coach P.K. O'Handley. "We've asked for James to contribute in new ways this season, and his offensive abilities have come out as he has gotten more comfortable."

Hansen is the second Black Hawk to announce a college decision during February. Max Edson confirmed his intentions to attend the United States Air Force Academy earlier this month. Fifteen players currently on the Waterloo roster now have college commitments. That list does not include Joe Rehkamp who accepted an offer to attend another WCHA school, St. Cloud State, at midseason.

The Black Hawks do not have an alumni presence on the Beavers' roster this season. However, forward Ryan Cramer completed a four-year career at Bemidji last season. The Hawks' long history with Bemidji State includes four players who were named to the school's 50 Legends for 50 Years team in 2005-2006.
