Normal CornBelters News Release

NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, have signed three pitchers from the 2012 Frontier League Draft. The CornBelters will play their first game of the 2012 season at the Corn Crib on Friday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. (CEFCU Opening Night).

Elio Briones joins the Belters after playing in an amateur circuit in Miami for a while. During that time, he has done well enough to garner the attention of several pro scouts.

"Briones is a classic starter that can eat up innings, and he can compete for a rotation spot or be a long relief player," said Field Manager Chad Parker.

Ryan Krumlauf played college ball at Garret College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During his freshman year at Garret College in 2010, Krumlauf contended to stay right in the .500 batting mark. This led him to finishing seventh in the nation for hitting and was named a First Team Division I All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association.

"Krumlauf is a rookie with dynamic stuff. He is a converted shortstop who has a fresh arm and will be either a great opener or closer," said Parker.

Brendon Smith was drafted by the Lincoln Saltdogs (AA) in 2010. While with the Saltdogs, Smith earned three wins and no losses in 20 games played, and had a 5.79 ERA. He then joined the Yuma Scorpions in 2011. With the Scorpions, Smith was acquired two losses in 11 games played and had a 9.58 ERA. He then returned to the Saltdogs to finish out the season.

"Smith is an experienced player that will compete for the top of our rotation," said Parker.
