Beetles win finale

Alexandria Beetles News Release

Duluth, MN - Scott Sanderson pitched six innings of one-run baseball and the Alexandria Beetles (18-27, 5-5) staved off several late rallies from the Duluth Huskies (25-20, 6-5) as the Beetles won the finale of a five game series by a 4-2 final on Saturday.

After the story of the first four games was the prolific offenses of the Beetles and Huskies, Sanderson and Duluth starter Dylan Thomas matched each other pitch for pitch in game five. The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Ryan Padilla snuck a check-swing double down the left field line to score Matt Beaty and Will Fulmer who had singled earlier in the inning.

For Fulmer, the single extended his hitting streak to 15 and his on-base streak to 28.

The Huskies appeared to open their account in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but on appeal, Wade Wass was ruled to have left early from third ending the threat. Sanderson surrendered his only run of the game in the sixth after a pair of singles and an RBI grounder halved the deficit.

Alexandria extended the lead in the seventh on a bizarre sequence when, with runners on first and second, Tanner Vavra hit a routine fly ball to right. But with Dylan Raper, the runner at second tagging, the throw to third bounced away from down the left field line sending Raper home. Thomas retrieved and threw to the plate, launching it over the head of catcher Paul Karmeris as the trail runner matt Lowenstein reached third, and with Lowenstein coming home, the relay from Karmeris to Connor Szerba now covering the plate was wild as the second run scored to make it 4-1.

A hit by pitch and double cut the Beetle lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh, and the Huskies loaded the bases and put two on in the ninth, but Alex Guilford and Anthony Bazzani pitched out of trouble, Bazzani for his eighth save, as the Beetles came away victorious.

Alexandria continues a five-game road trip on Sunday with a 1:05 CDT start in Rochester.
