Bees Take Game One With 5-1 Victory

HIDALGO, Texas---The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees took the first of a best-of-three playoff series with a convincing 5-1 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays Monday night at Dodge Arena. Grant Goeckner-Zoeller (1-2-3) and Topher Scott (1-2-3) each posted three points while Wylie Rogers made 30 saves for his first professional playoff win.

Rio came out firing with Aaron Lee posting the first goal just 52 seconds into the game with helpers from Scott and Bennefield. Scott followed at 6:02 while Goeckner-Zoeller converted just one second into a power play at 8:19 to make it 3-0 RGV lead. Bennefield finished off the period with a 2-on-1 conversion on a Goeckner-Zoeller feed at 11:19 to put the Bees up 4-0 going into the second period.

Corpus killed off a 5-on-3 Killer Bee advantage for 1:35 in the middle period and scored their only goal of the night while short handed at 12:05. Jereme Tendler popped home a rebound after John Adams rifled a shot from 20-feet out.

Dumoulin put the Bees back up by four with just 11 seconds left in the period on the power play giving the Bees a 5-1 lead heading into the final frame.

The third period was intense as tempers flared between the two teams and multiple confrontations occured.

Rogers got the win in net with 30 saves, while Kris Tebbs suffered the loss with 30 saves.

Rio travels to Corpus Christi on Wednesday for Game 2 of the series at 7:05 p.m. All Killer Bee fans who won't be making the trip to Corpus Christi can catch the game live at Jacksons Sports Bar and Grill in McAllen via the CHL Network or listen live on Real Country 102.1 FM. Game 3, if neccesary, will be at Dodge Arena Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
