July 6, 2006 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release

Hidalgo, Texas -- After three seasons in the Rio Grande Valley, defenseman, alternate captain, and community service leader Darcy Smith announced his retirement from playing professional hockey on Thursday.

The 30-year-old Alberta native ends his career with the Killer Bees second all-time in franchise games played (183) and second all-time in PIM (345). He had his best statistical season in 2005-06, posting career-highs in goals, assists and points (3-17-20).

Smith's career totals include 283 games played, 52 points (9-43-52) and 729 PIM. His six-year pro career, which was split up by three seasons (2000-2003) at the University of Alberta, saw him play for four teams in four leagues. He began his career in 1997-98 with the ECHL's Peoria Rivermen. He also played games for the Detroit Vipers (IHL) and Idaho Steelheads (WCHL) before coming to the Valley.

"My decision has nothing to do with the coaching change," said Smith. "It's based on what's best for my future and building a future. I told Tony (Martino) that if it wasn't for this opportunity in Edmonton I'd be down there playing."

Smith is leaving the game to accept a safety position at Sure-Form Construction, LTD, an industrial construction company in Edmonton. Along with his new job, which entails overseeing all safety aspects of a construction site, Smith will be completing his degree in physical education.

As part of his degree, he will serve as an assistant coach with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks. "My degree concentration is in coaching," said Smith, "and I'd like to continue down that path. Whether it's college, junior, or pro, I'd like to keep my hand in the game."

In honor of the impact Smith made in the Rio Grande Valley, the Killer Bees announced that the organization will rename the annual "Soul to Service Award" the "Darcy Smith Leadership Award." The award goes to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice; the spirit of giving back; and noteworthy contributions in the Rio Grande Valley community.

"Darcy's willingness to be a face for the organization was tireless," said Killer Bees General Manager Grant Buckborough. "He welcomed every opportunity to interact with our fans throughout the Valley. In addition, his leadership and work-ethic on and off the ice defined what the award will be about as we move ahead."

"I'd like to thank the organization for the chance to help build a franchise, and the fans for all the great support they've given me over the years," said Smith. "Being treated so well by the fans and the organization is what made the Valley such an enjoyable place to play."

The Killer Bees are getting ready for the fourth season of CHL action in the Rio Grande Valley. Opening weekend has been set for October 20 and 21, 2006. The complete CHL schedule is expected to be released in late July. Season tickets and corporate sponsorships are available now by calling (956) 843-PUCK.
