New Britain Bees News Release

In two tight one-run contests, the New Britain Bees and Sugar Land Skeeters split a doubleheader Thursday, with the Bees (6-8) winning game one 1-0 and the Skeeters (8-7) taking the second game 2-1.

Game one starter Cole Johnson (2-1) was dominant in his third start of the season, tossing the first complete game shutout in Bees' history in the abbreviated seven inning game. The Newington resident struck out six and allowed just two hits while lowering his ERA on the season to a minuscule 0.47 ERA, good for second in the Atlantic League.

Third baseman Jovan Rosa provided the sole run of the first half of the double-header with a long home run to left-center field off Skeeters' reliever Zech Zinicola (0-1). The home run was his first on the season and extended his hitting streak to ten games.

The second game of the doubleheader also was a tight one, with starting pitchers Josh Zeid (4 IP) and Bryan Morgando (5 IP) allowing just one run on four hits. Skeeters' outfielder Jeremy Barfield drove home both runs for his team in the game, including the eventual game-winning hit with a solo home run in the top half of the fifth inning off reliever Jarret Leverett (0-1). The left-handed Morgado moved to 1-2 with the win.

Up next, the Bees will hit the road for a six-game road trip. The first stop is Lancaster, Pennsylvania where the Bees will take on the 5-7 Lancaster Barnstormers. Right-hander Kyle Simon (0-0, 1.80) will get the start for the Bees tomorrow night. First pitch from Clipper Magazine Stadium will be 7 PM.
