Bedard Hat Trick Leads Icehawks Past Gems

PORT HURON, MI - Port Huron Icehawks rookie Mickael Bedard recorded a hat trick on Sunday to lead the Icehawks to a 6-2 victory over the Dayton Gems at McMorran Arena. The win is the Icehawks eighth straight on home ice and moves them into a first place tie with the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the International Hockey League standings.

Bedard and linemates Derek Patrosso and Pete Rouleau combined for four goals and five assists. Bedard tallied three goals and an assist, Patrosso netted one goal and two assists and Rouleau dished out a pair of assists. Icehawks goalie Larry Sterling also had a big game, making 28 saves for his sixth consecutive win.

The Icehawks found themselves shorthanded early in the first period, but successfully killed off a four minute penalty on Bedard. Port Huron built on that momentum as the period progressed and exploded for four goals in the final nine minutes of the frame.

The spree began when Brandon Naurato capitalized on the Icehawks first power play opportunity of the game on assists from Jason Selleke and Mike Gershon at 11:11. The Icehawks improved their lead to 2-0 just over two minutes later on Bedard's first goal of the period at 13:41. He was assisted by Rouleau and Jamie Lovell.

Bedard struck again at 18:38, this time on an assist from Patrosso. Just 31 seconds later, Bedard fed the puck to Patrosso, who beat goalie Derek MacIntyre at 19:09 to make it a four goal game. Gershon was also credited with an assist. Shots were tied 8-8 in the period.

Dayton got on the board with a Corey Couturier power play goal at 15:52 in the second period, but Bedard fired back with his third goal of the game at 17:47 to make it 5-1. The Icehawks outshot the Gems 15-14 in the period.

Early in the third period the Icehawks added yet another goal, this time off the stick off Kerry Bowman at 2:36. Adam Maccarone and Tab Lardner assisted. The Gems landed their second goal of the game as the period wound down to make the final score 6-2. The goal was scored by Jonathan Ornelas at 13:42 on assists from Mike Vaskivuo and Preston Briggs. The Icehawks outshot the Gems 10-8 in the period and 33-30 overall.

With the win the Icehawks improve to 20-7-0-1 with 41 points in the IHL standings. The fifth place Gems fall to 12-14-3-1 with 28 points.

The Icehawks are back in action on Tuesday when the Quad City Mallards come to town. The Icehawks also play at home on Saturday versus the Muskegon Lumberjacks, before heading to Dayton for a rematch with the Gems on Sunday.
