Beavers Sweeney named PCL Pitcher of the Week

PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Beavers right-hander Brian Sweeney has been named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for the inclusive span of April 19-25, it was announced today.

Sweeney, who joined the Beavers in an off-season trade with Seattle, was 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA (1er, 12.0ip) in two starts during the week. He led the Beavers to a 4-1 win over Las Vegas on April 19 and piloted the team's 5-0 shutout victory at Salt Lake on April 24, scattering four hits over 6.0 innings of work in Portland's second blanking in as many days.

Sweeney, who struck out eight and issued just one walk in the two starts, is the first Portland player to be honored with the league's weekly award and is the eighth (fourth pitcher) to singled out in the team's four seasons. Jeremy Powell (2001), Junior Herndon (2002) and Clay Condrey (2003) are the other Portland pitchers to be named Pitcher of the Week. Ernie Young (2001), Alex Pelaez (2002), Jason Bay (2003) and Alex Fernandez (2003) are the four Beavers to be named in the weekly hitting category.

Edmonton's Valentino Pascucci was named the PCL's Batter of the Week after hitting five home runs and driving in 10 last week.
