Valentino Pascucci, Brian Sweeney Win PCL Player of the Week Honors

April 26, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Thanks to an offensive surge that saw one Edmonton Trappers offensive record fall and three more tied, outfielder Valentino Pascucci earns the Pacific Coast League's Batter of the Week for games beginning on April 19th and continuing through April 25th. Portland starter Brian Sweeney wins Pitcher of the Week for the same period after winning two games in as many starts while allowing just one run in 12 total innings pitched.

Pascucci entered the week without a home run, but ended it with five, and drove in 10 runs to vault into a tie for third in the PCL with 18 RBI on the season. On April 22nd, the native of Cerritos, California went 4-for-5 with a franchise record-tying three doubles, three runs scored, a home run, and three RBI to help the Trappers beat Fresno 11-5. The next day, the former Oklahoma Sooner struck again, going 4-for-5 with a franchise record-tying three homers, a double, and six runs batted in as Edmonton downed the Grizzlies 13-4. Pascucci's 14 total bases in the contest set a new Trappers single-game mark and his five runs scored tied another, while contributing to his League-leading 19 for the year. On the week, the outfielder scored 11 times while racking up a slugging percentage of 1.032, a performance that earned him a promotion to the Montreal Expos after Sunday's game.

Right-handed starter Brian Sweeney began the week on April 19th by allowing the Las Vegas 51s one home run and a total of five hits through six innings to win his first game of the season. Five days later, the Yonkers, New York native shut out the Salt Lake Stingers through six innings, yielding just four hits and striking out four to win his second consecutive start. The San Diego Padres prospect's 0.75 earned run average for the week helped lower his season mark to 2.63, third lowest among Beavers starters.
