Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Gabe Gross hit two home runs - including a three-run blast as part of Nashville's five-run second inning - and the Sounds earned a split in their series with the Portland Beavers by hanging on for a 10-9 victory before 7,331 Saturday night at PGE Park.

Vinny Rotino was 3-for-5 with two RBIs, Rickie Weeks added three hits and Gross drove in four runs and scored three times for the Sounds. (69-45).

The Sounds built their lead to as big as 8-0, but the Beavers (46-69) rallied to get back to within a run thanks to a three-run rally in the ninth.

Both of Gross' home runs, as well as a solo homer by Chris Barnwell, came off Portland starter Shawn Estes, who was making his Beavers debut as he recovers from "Tommy John" surgery. Estes (0-1), a veteran of 12 major league seasons, allowed eight runs over 3 1/3 innings in the loss.

Adam Pettyjohn (9-2) worked six innings, allowing four runs (3 earned) and eight hits for the win. Luther Hackman retired one batter to get his 16th save.

Frank Menechino had three hits and four RBIs, pitcher Steve Watkins drove in two runs and Brian Myrow extended his hitting streak to 11 games for the Beavers, who open a four-game series with the Memphis Redbirds at PGE Park Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The team will wear pink jerseys as part as "Strike Out Breast Cancer Day."

NOTES: Former Beaver first baseman and fan-favorite Tagg Bozied marks his return to PGE Park on Sunday as part of the Redbirds roster. Bozied played three seasons for the Beavers (2003-05), hitting 32 home runs and driving in 127 runs over 190 games in a Portland uniform ... to make room for Estes on the roster, the Beavers placed pitcher Kyle Stutes on the temporary inactive list Saturday.
