New Mexico Scorpions News Release
SCORPIONS RECAP â
SCORPIONS 2, TULSA 1 (SO) â Vladimir Hartinger (credited with the game-winner) and Mike Oliveira scored in the shootout as the Scorpions came from behind to beat Tulsa 2-1 on Tuesday. Miguel Beaudry made 33 saves for the game and stopped all four Oilers attempts in the shootout. Oliveira tied the game at 2:31 of the third period, assisted by Matt Mathias and Peter Ambroziak, after Tulsa had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second frame. Tulsa goalie Tim Kelleher also had a strong game with 40 saves.
SCORPIONS 6, FORT WORTH 0 â Miguel Beaudry stopped 37 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Scorpions cruised past Fort Worth 6-0 on Friday for their 11th straight victory over the Brahmas dating back to the 1998-99 season. Mike Oliveira and Peter Ambroziak led the Scorpions with a goal and two assists each. Vladimir Hartinger recorded his second two-goal game of the season. Daryl Moor and Clint Wensley also scored as New Mexico scored two shorthanded goals in a game for the first time this year.
SCORPIONS 4, OKLAHOMA CITY 0 â Miguel Beaudry stopped 49 shots to become the first goalie in Scorpions history to record back-to-back shutouts in a 4-0 win over Oklahoma City on Saturday. The Scorpions' "BMW Line" of Brian Barker, Walker McDonald and Clint Wensley each recorded a goal and an assist. McDonald picked up the Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, assist and a fight. Mike Possin had the other Scorpions goal. The Blazers outshot New Mexico 49-34 for the game, including 24-7 in the first period as Beaudry made save after save.
SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS â
ODESSA â The Scorpions look to even the season series with the Jackalopes after taking the first game on Dec. 26 but seeing Odessa claim the last two, including a 3-1 win at Odessa on Feb. 13. The Jackalopes will miss the playoffs this year for the first time in five seasons. Two-time All-Star Sebastien Thinel leads the Jackalopes with 24 goals and 63 points, followed closely by linemate Mike Rutter (23g-35a-58pts). Scott Hillman is sixth among defensemen with 50 points (9g-41a). Mike Gorman is 11-14-0 with a 2.81 GAA for the Jackalopes and has started 21 of the last 23 games.
AMARILLO â With a 4-3 win at home on Feb. 27, the Scorpions clinched the season series with the Gorillas as they are 5-3-0 with one game remaining at Amarillo on Friday. The Gorillas are 21-7-1 at home this season, where they have won two of three meetings from the Scorpions. Derek Hahn leads Amarillo in scoring with 66 points (29g-37a), followed by Scott Wray (24g-28a), Henry Kuster (20g-32a) and Mark DeSantis (12g-40a), all with 52 points. Goalie Shawn Degagne is fourth in the CHL with 28 wins as he has a 28-16-2 record on the year with a 2.59 GAA. The Gorillas are fighting with San Angelo for the Southwest Division title, trailing by a point as both teams have four games left.
SAN ANGELO â The Scorpions will try to avoid getting swept by the Saints when they visit San Angelo on Saturday night. San Angelo won at home 4-3 on Oct. 28 and in New Mexico 3-1 on Dec. 19. Goalie Scott Reid is a finalist for league MVP, as he is third with 29 wins (29-9-4, 2.39 GAA). He also leads the CHL with a .935 save percentage and 1435 saves as the Saints the second-most shots per game at 35.53. All-Star Chris Minard leads his team with 35 goals and 67 points, followed by Trevor Weisgerber (23g-35a-58pts) and Ryan Finnerty (21g-34a-55pts). The Saints are the league's least penalized team, averaging 14.42 PIM per game.
OKLAHOMA CITY â The Blazers will miss the playoffs for the first time in their 12-year history after dropping four straight games to start March. Oklahoma City has not scored against the Scorpions in 2004, as the Scorpions have shut out the Blazers in their last two meetings, a 1-0 shootout win on Jan. 3 and Saturday's 4-0 victory. Marty Standish leads the Blazers with 53 points (18g-35a) while Doug Sheppard is first with 24 goals and second with 48 points. Goalies Boyd Ballard (16-15-2, 2.87 GAA) and Sean Connors (10-12-5, 2.91 GAA) split time between the pipes for Oklahoma City.
PLAYOFF PICTURE â The Scorpions trail Memphis and Wichita by seven points and Indianapolis by six heading into the final week of the regular season. The playoff picture is pretty simple for the Scorps. They need to win their last four games while Wichita needs to lose their remaining games in regulation and the loser of Saturday's Indianapolis at Memphis game needs to lose that game and all of their other remaining contests.
BEAUTIFUL BEAUDRY â Miguel Beaudry became the first goaltender in the Scorpions' eight-year history to record back-to-back shutouts. As a team, they were the first back-to-back whitewashes for the Scorpions since consecutive 5-0 wins over San Angelo and Monroe on Jan. 17 and 19, 2001. Beaudry's scoreless streak is up to 162:26 overall, and 130:44 against Oklahoma City. The last CHL goaltender to record three straight zeroes was tomorrow's opponent, Odessa's Mike Gorman, who turned the trick from Jan. 24 to 30 last year, including a 4-0 win over the Scorpions on Jan. 24. Indianapolis goalie Shawn Silver had a league-record scoreless streak of 222:01 last season.
STINGERS â Saturday's win guaranteed the Scorpions will finish over .500 for the fifth straight season and seventh time in eight seasons (not counting 2000-01 when points were taken away by the league)... They finished with a 21-10-1 home record, marking the fifth time in eight seasons they earned more than 20 wins at Tingley Coliseum and first since 2000-01... Mike Oliveira is currently tied for eighth in the CHL with 74 points... The Scorpions scored two shorthanded goals on Friday against Fort Worth, the first time they had accomplished the feat since Feb. 1, 2003 against Lubbock... Vladimir Hartinger has a point in three straight games and with 33 points this season has topped his previous best of 30 set last season with the Scorpions and Wichita.
