Bears Split Doubleheader, Loree Fans Eight As Raines Blasts 10th Homer in Game 2

Newark, N.J. - The Newark Bears defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-3 in game two of a doubleheader on Tuesday at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Blue Crabs took game one, 8-4.
In the opener, it was all about the first inning as the teams combined to score nine runs on 10 hits with 19 batters coming to the plate. Southern Maryland got on the scoreboard first against Derek Blacksher collecting three-straight singles to start the game. Patrick Osborn drew a RBI walk followed by an Eric Crozier two-run double to make it 3-0 Blue Crabs. Travis Garcia plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Jeremy Owens added a RBI single to push the lead to five runs.
The Bears came right back to score four runs off Dan Reichert in the home first inning. Tim Raines, Jr. led off the frame with a double, extending his hitting streak to 19 games. He eventually scored on an infield groundout by Kennard Jones. Carl Everett singled and Brian Barton followed with a two-run homer, his 16th of the season, to cut the lead to 5-3. Eric Munson singled and was pushed home on a bases-loaded walk from Randy Gress and Newark down just a run, 5-4.
The score remained the same through the next five frames as Blacksher scattered just two more hits and set down seven straight at one point. Reichert allowed just one hit over the same span, while retiring eight-in-a-row. In the visitor's seventh, the Blue Crabs added three insurance runs against reliever Nick Renault. Garcia drove in his second run of the game with a bases-loaded single and Ben Harrison plated two more with a bases-loaded single. Reichert (16-9) pitched six innings, allowing four earned runs, to earn his Atlantic League-leading 16th win. Bryan Dumesnil pitched the final inning to close out the Bears. Blacksher (1-5) surrendered five runs on six hits, with four walks and four strikeouts over six innings of work.
In the nightcap, Southern Maryland took an early advantage as Shaun Cumberland doubled and scored on a wild pitch off Mike Loree in the first. Raines Jr. led the Bears comeback in the home second against Connor Robertson. With James Cooper aboard, Tim Raines Jr. tied the league-high with his 21stconsecutive hit as he blasted his 10 th home run of the season to make it 2-1 Bears. Newark added a run in the fourth off Chris Hayes on a Raines Jr. ground ball that plated Cooper and the lead grew to 3-1.
Loree was at his best with just two more hits allowed over the remainder of his night. The Blue Crabs added an unearned run in the sixth on a throwing error and a sacrifice fly to pull within one, down 3-2. The Bears sealed the win with an error, a Sandy Madera RBI single and a two-run double by Carl Everett pushing across four runs and it was 7-2. Richard Giannotti hit a solo home run out to right off Armando Benitez in the seventh, but the 'Crabs could draw no closer as he struck out the side.
Loree (6-9) earned the win allowing just two runs, one earned, on four hits, while fanning a season-best eight batters over six innings of work. Robertson (6-4) took the loss, tossing three innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Bears and Blue Crabs continue the series with a Wednesday night clash. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the gates of Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium opening at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday is also "Kids Eat Free," presented by Dr. Thomas Haveron.
