Bears sign Kip Brennan, Machesney to play for Team Canada

HERSHEY - The HERSHEY BEARS announced today that left wing Kip Brennan has been signed to an AHL standard player's contract for the balance of the 2008-09 season. In addition, the BEARS also announced today that goaltender Daren Machesney will take a leave of absence from December 26-January 2 to play for Team Canada at the 2008 Spengler Cup tournament in Davos, Switzerland. The announcements were made today by BEARS President/GM Doug Yingst.

Brennan, 28, returns to HERSHEY after skating for the BEARS in 26 regular season and six Calder Cup playoff games in 2006-07. He scored four goals and recorded 67 penalty minutes during the 2006-07 regular season for the BEARS. Brennan split the 2007-08 season between Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL) and the New York Islanders (NHL), amassing 259 penalty minutes in 52 games played. He will be eligible to play Friday when the BEARS travel to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to face the Penguins at 7:05 p.m.

Machesney, 22, is 9-4-0 this season for HERSHEY, including two shutouts, and was 22-10-2 in 2007-08 for the BEARS. He will take leave of the team on December 26, and miss home games against Binghamton and Albany on December 27 and 28, and also the December 31 game in Springfield against the Falcons. Machesney is expected to return in time for HERSHEY'S game in Providence on January 2.

The BEARS host the Lowell Devils and Lake Erie Monsters this weekend at GIANT Center, with the Devils visiting on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. before the Monsters come to call at 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Tickets for both games are available at the GIANT Center box office, or by calling (717) 534-3911.
