Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, N.J., July 3-The fireworks started a day early as the Newark Bears and Camden Riversharks combined for 31 hits and 20 runs in a game won by Camden, 11-9, in ten innings Thursday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The loss drops Newark to 29-29 on the season.
With the score tied, 8-8, Stoney Briggs led off the 10th inning with a home run off of Bears righty Damon Ponce de Leon (0-3). Later in the inning Bryon Gainey hit a two-out, two-run home run off of Ponce de Leon, his 10th of the season, to give the 'Sharks an 11-8 lead. The Bears would scored one run in the bottom of the tenth on Eddy Martinez' RBI single, but would fall short, 11-9.
The Bears forced extra innings by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Martinez had an RBI single; Rickey Henderson delivered an RBI triple to right field; and Paul Esposito tied the game, 8-8, with a run-scoring double. However with the winning run on second base and nobody out, the Bears could not drive in the winner. Cliff Foster (1-0) came out of the Camden bullpen and struck out the side, stranding Esposito.
Newark was led offensively by Esposito, who was 3-6 with 2 doubles and an RBI, Henderson, who went 2-6 with the triple and 2 runs-batted-in, Wil Quintana, who was 2-5 with his 15th home run and one RBI, and by Francisco Lebron, who was 2-4 with a pair of doubles.
Camden's Jesus Azuaje was 3-4 on the night with a home run, his 2nd, a triple, a sacrifice fly and 3 runs-batted-in. Gainey finished the night 3-5 with the home run, a double and 4 RBI.
