Bears Large Lead Disappears in Loss

July 31, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears blew a 7-1 lead and lost 13-8 to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes Sunday at Volcanoes Stadium. The Bears tied a season high with 16 hits, but it was not enough.

The Bears produced two runs in the first inning thanks to an error and back-to-back singles from Garrett Weber and Marc Bourgeois.

After a run in the bottom of the first for the Volcanoes, the Bears got a solo home run from Tyler Bream in the second inning to go back up by two runs.

Bourgeois had a triple to drive in a run and then he scored a run in the third inning to extend the Bears lead to 5-1.

In the fourth inning Steve Rodriguez singled and Westley Moss doubled to set the table for Raul Navarro and Garrett Weber, who singled and doubled, respectively, to plate the two runners and give the Bears a 7-1 lead.

Things fell apart for the Bears after that. A three-run home run by Danny Brock was part of a four-run fourth inning for the Volcanoes.

In the fifth inning, eight batters would score for the Volcanoes. The scoring explosion was capped by a Brett Krill grand slam home run.

Bourgeois singled to score Danny Pulfer in the sixth inning for the final score of the day.

Starter Adam Kudryk allowed six earned runs and seven runs total in four and third innings. Miles Reagan was charged with five earned runs in only one third of an inning. Drew Zizinia allowed one run in an inning and a third before Greg Robinson and Justin Albert finished the day with a scoreless inning each.

The Bears outhit the Volcaoes 16-10, but the seven walks issued by the Bears pitching staff were costly. Bourgeois finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a walk, and three RBIs. Weber also had three hits, including a double. Navarro and Moss both went 2-for-5, while Pulfer finished 2-for-4.

The Bears went 1-4 in the series at Salem-Keizer and the team is now 1-5 in the second half of the Northwest League Season. After a day off tomorrow, the Bears start a five-game homestand and series against the Everett Aquasox. Right-handed pitcher Alex Capaul is expected to start for the Bears, while lefty Bennett Whitmore is slated to start for the Aquasox Tuesday.
