Newark Bears News Release
BROCKTON, MA. - Jorge Jimenez had four hits and belted three solo homers, including a two-out walk-off blast off reliever Andrew Pluta in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the Brockton Rox a 5-4 victory over the Newark Bears in the final game of a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Campanelli Stadium.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Bears (11-6), who had been the hottest team in the Can-Am League prior to Sunday's game, winning nine of their last 10 contests. Brockton improved to 10-7 with the win.
It was the second straight game that the Bears and Rox played 12 innings, with Newark earning a 2-1 victory on Saturday night. The Rox took an early 1-0 lead when Jimenez lofted a solo homer against Bears starter Jacob Wild in the bottom of the third. The Bears took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run triple from Danny Santiesteban, who paced the Bears with two hits and three RBI. Santiesteban's two-run triple scored Tim Raines, Jr., who had three hits in vain, and Daryle Ward.
The Rox then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Mike Torres hit a two-run homer, then pushed the lead to 4-2 on Jimenez's second homer, a solo shot off Wild in the fifth inning.
Wild pitched well for the Bears, going eight innings, allowing just four hits and four runs, striking out five and walking two. The Bears tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth on RBI doubles from Raines, Jr. and Santiesteban. For Raines, Jr., it was the 21st RBI of the young season, a total that leads the Can-Am League. Raines Jr.'s three hits gave him a .403 batting average for the year. The Bears had good scoring chances in the eighth, when Kyle LaMotta made it all the way to third, but they could not get the go-ahead run to score.
Travis Hughes pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the win. Andrew Pluta pitched a solid 3 2/3 innings of relief for the Bears, but dealt up the final Jimenez homer to suffer the setback, falling to 1-2 on the season.
The Bears now travel to Worcester, MA for three games with the Tornadoes, with the first game Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Aaron Kalb (0-1) will get the start for the Bears. The Bears return home Friday night, June 17, against the Brockton Rox, with game time slated for 5:35 p.m.
