Bears Carreras An All Star

August 30, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears have been informed by the Northwest League that left-handed pitcher Alex Carreras was named to the 2012 All-Star team. The league selected a total of 13 players to the All-Star team, including one left-handed starting pitcher.

With three games remaining in the Northwest League season, Carreras leads the league with eight wins and is ranked eighth with a 3.04 ERA. The 22 year-old Carreras is in his first professional season after defecting from Cuba to the Dominican Republic. Carreras has one more start scheduled for the regular season, which will come in the Bears final regular season home game Saturday at Yakima County Stadium.

Seattle Mariners affiliate Everett led the league in selections. Patrick Kivlehan was named as the third baseman and Most Valuable Player. Taylor Ard was named the first baseman and the designated hitter. Finally, Mike Zunino, who only played 29 games in the Northwest League, was named to the team as the catcher.

Tri-City (outfielders Francisco Sosa and Kyle Von Tungeln), Eugene (relievers Chris Nunn and Roman Madrid) and Vancouver (shortstop Jorge Flores and pitcher Javier Avendano) all had two players named to the team. Vancouver's Clayton McCullough was selected as the Manager of the Year. Outfielder Royce Bolinger of Spokane and second baseman Gioskar Amaya of Boise are the other two members of the team.

The Bears are set to start the playoffs Monday in Boise. Game two of a best of three series against the Hawks will be played Tuesday at 7:05 at Yakima County Stadium. Tickets can be purchased from the Bears downtown office at 17 North 3rd Street, by phone at (509) 457-5151, or online at yakimabears.com. In addition to single game tickets, the Bears are offering ticket packages that allow fans to reserve seats for all four of the possible home playoff games.
