Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania, Thursday, December 1 - The Erie BayHawks (1-2) overcame a rough start to capture their first win of the season in front of a home opener crowd of 4,526, prevailing 105-87 over the Maine Red Claws (0-2).
Maine jumped out to an early 13-3 lead that included five points by Chris Wright, and Erie's early woes continued as Kyle Goldcamp picked up three fouls and they found themselves down 27-18 at the end of the frame.
But Erie had a stellar second quarter as they put together an 18-6 run, with Tirrell Baines and Mychel Thompson each connecting on 3-point shots. The BayHawks took the lead at 5:42 in the second quarter on another Thompson three-pointer and never looked back as the lead grew to 53-46 at the break.
Donald Sloan's nine points in the third quarter helped Erie maintain a seven point lead up 80-73 heading in to the final frame.
The BayHawks finished off the game outscoring the visitors in the final frame 25-14 to cruise to their first win of the 2011-12 campaign.
Thompson led all scorers with 24 points, including five three-pointers, and Chris Daniels contributed a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sloan dropped in 19 and Kyle Spain and Tirrell Baines added 12 apiece.
Maine was led by Kenny Hayes' 20 points, Wright nabbed a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards, Justin Brownlee had 14 and Antonio Anderson chipped in 10.
The BayHawks head to Des Moines, Iowa for a weekend series with the defending D-League champion Iowa Energy before returning home again on December 9 to face the Canton Charge. Maine heads home to face Springfield for their home opener on Saturday night.
