Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania, Monday, April 1 - The Erie BayHawks hosted the Springfield Armor for a Monday matinee game this afternoon at Erie Insurance Arena. The BayHawks had a roster shake-up right before the game as Mustafa Shakur and Kyle Goldcamp were both deactivated due to injuries. Rookie center Henry Sims also left the team to pursue other options. After struggling for much of the first three quarters, Erie got a boost from Cory Higgins in the fourth to down the Armor, 83-81.
The BayHawks (25-23) shot just 33% in the first quarter and Springfield (18-29) took a six point advantage into the second frame. The Armor controlled the second quarter as well and increased their lead to seven at the break.
Springfield received eight points from both Ben Uzoh and Willie Reed in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 12, their largest of the game. Erie was able to cut into the deficit and trailed by five points heading into the final twelve minutes. The BayHawks used a 14-4 run in the fourth quarter to take their first lead of the game on a Higgins three-pointer with under seven minutes remaining. Higgins scored a total of 11 points during the period. Erie would hold the lead for the remainder of the contest and close out the Armor, 83-81.
Higgins led the BayHawks with 27 points. Nick Covington finished with 14 and Tirrell Baines added 12 for Erie. Springfield was led by Reed, who finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Uzoh tallied 16 and Dominique Jones scored 15 for the Armor.
The win keeps the BayHawks alive in the playoff race with just two regular season games remaining. They're battling with Fort Wayne, Sioux Falls and Maine for the final two spots in the 2013 NBA Development League Playoffs.
Erie will welcome the Maine Red Claws to town on Friday for a pivotal two game series that will likely decide each team's playoff fate. Springfield travels to Austin to face the Toros on Wednesday evening.
