TOWSON, Md. - Looking to even their record, the defending Major League Lacrosse champion Baltimore Bayhawks complete the first half of their schedule when they host the Long Island Lizards at Johnny Unitas Stadium at Towson University on Friday night. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast locally on WJFK-AM 1300.
Now 2-3 on the season, the Bayhawks won their second straight home game last Friday night in a 14-9 victory over Rochester. Attackman Mark Millon led the team with a game-high four goals and three assists, while rookie attackman Matt Ward recorded his first hat trick with a three-goal, two-assist effort. He was named as the Cascade MLL Rookie of the Week for his efforts.
Millon leads the Bayhawks with 14 goals and seven assists while Ward has recorded five goals, including a two-pointer, with two assists in two games. Attackman Tom Marechek has scored 14 goals with four assists, but is doubtful for the game on Friday night after injuring his hamstring in last week's win over the Rattlers. Rookie goalkeeper Greg Havalchak will make his second straight start following a 17-save effort against Rochester last week.
The Long Island Lizards are 1-4 on the season after suffering a 13-12 defeat to undefeated Philadelphia at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon. After defeating Baltimore by a 17-11 margin in the season opener, the Lizards have lost four straight and are in last place in the Eastern Conference. Midfielder Blake Miller scored six goals in the loss for Long Island while attackman Keith Cromwell added three assists.
Miller leads the Lizards with 17 goals and two assists while Cromwell leads the team with 11 assists and ranks second with 17 points. Goalkeeper Greg Cattrano, who spent the first three seasons of his MLL career in Baltimore, has started all five games and has stopped 51.1 per cent of the shots he has faced. He is allowing 13.76 goals per game.
The two teams met in the season opener on May 20 as Long Island won by 17-11. Attackman Tim Goettelmann led the Lizards with three goals and three assists while Miller added a three-goal, two-assist outing. Midfielder Mike Mollot paced Baltimore with three goals and one assist in his Baltimore debut while Millon and midfielder Justin Redd each scored two goals and two assists.
Baltimore will travel to Rochester to face the Rattlers next Saturday night before returning home to host the Boston Cannons at Unitas Stadium on Saturday, July 8 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in a game which will be televised by ESPN2.
