Dragons Head to Denver to Play Outlaws in MLL's Newest, Fiercest Rivalry

June 22, 2006 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL)
San Francisco Dragons News Release

San Francisco, CA -In the pantheon of great sports rivalries, such as the Giants and the Dodgers, the Red Sox and the Yankees, or Michigan and Ohio State; a new entry will have to be made for the San Francisco Dragons (2-2) and the Denver Outlaws (4-1).

These two teams have emerged as serious contenders in Major League Lacrosse's new expansion Western Conference, and meet this Saturday in Denver. "It's going to have big playoff implications," says Dragons midfielder Chris Rotelli, "We might not feel that right now because it is still early in the season, but when everything plays out in the end it will."

Dragons GM Doug Locker also sees the playoff implications that are looming large over this contest. "With the new MLL playoff structure, only one of the four playoff teams is guaranteed to come out of the West, so while Saturday's game isn't a 'must-win', it's as close to a 'must win' as they come for the Western Conference Championship." says Locker.

If it's true that familiarity breeds contempt, than the relationship between the Dragons and the Outlaws must be as contemptuous as it seems; this meeting will already be the third time Denver plays San Francisco in the Dragon's first five scheduled games.

The Outlaws, who are currently perched atop the Western Division, spoiled the Dragons' inaugural home game in their first meeting. San Francisco returned the favor two weeks later by ruining the Outlaws' undefeated record and handing them their first franchise loss in front of their home fans in Denver.

The third and final meeting this season between the Dragons and the Outlaws will take place at INVESCO Field at Mile High this Saturday, June 24th at 7:30 PM, MST. It will be broadcast on tape delay on Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain on Monday, June 25th at 12:00 PM MST.
