Erie BayHawks News Release
Erie, Pennsylvania - The Erie BayHawks halted a three game skid on Friday night with a win over the visiting Iowa Energy, 99-84. Erie led virtually the entire game while improving their record to 3-4. BayHawks guard Nick Covington led the way with 23 points, including five three pointers.
Iowa (2-4) took it's only lead of the game on a Ben Strong hook shot to open the scoring. Following a Keith Benson fade away jumper to tie the game, Erie never looked back. The BayHawks led by as many as eleven points in the first quarter and finished the frame up nine. Erie took it's largest lead of the game in the second quarter when Oscar Bellfield connected from deep to put the BayHawks ahead by 15. Covington's 11 second quarter points helped his team take a nine point advantage into the break, 51-42.
The Energy were able to pull within three points during the third stanza but trailed by five entering the final twelve minutes. Once again, Covington led the way with nine points in the fourth quarter and helped the BayHawks close out the Energy by 15.
Erie's D.J. Kennedy continued to stuff the stat sheet as he finished with 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Mychel Thompson (13), Tirrell Baines (13) and Henry Sims (11) also scored in double figures while Keith Benson scored nine points, grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds and swatted five Iowa shots. Newly acquired Morris Almond led the Energy with 17 points off the bench. Strong, Justin Hurtt and Chris Wright also scored ten points apiece for Iowa. Wright struggled to find his shot, connecting on only three of 16 shots from the field after his 31 point performance against the BayHawks last Sunday.
The BayHawks return to action at the Erie Insurance Arena on Sunday at 2:00 pm to square off against the Maine Red Claws. Iowa travels to Canton tomorrow to face the Charge at 7:30 pm. Sunday will be the second day of the BayHawks Marine Corps Toys for Tots toy drive. Any fan who presents a new, unwrapped toy will receive a free main level ticket to the game.
