Hoboken, NJ -- The Washington Bayhawks of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) entered the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft with nine selections including two first round picks. The team left with a pair of Tewaaraton Award Finalists and seven other players looking to make an impact on the professional game. The Bayhawks selected Virginia Attackman Danny Glading with the fifth overall selection and Syracuse Midfielder Matt Abbott with the ninth overall selection and second pick in the first round.
"Danny and Matt bring a lot of lacrosse experience to the professional game," said Bayhawks Co-Owner and General Manager Scott Hiller. "Both of them have played in several NCAA Tournaments. Both of them are being honored as Tewaaraton Finalists this year. We are very happy to have them playing for us this season after tremendous college careers."
Glading is one of five men's finalists nominated for the Tewaaraton Award which is presented to the top men's and women's college player in the country each year. Glading recorded 32 goals and 31 assists for 63 points during his senior season at Virginia. He was also named the Preseason Player of the Year. Glading is local to Washington, having played at Georgetown Prep in high school. He will join his brother Billy on the Bayhawks roster. Billy Glading is in his second year with the Bayhawks and a key role player at defensive midfield.
"Danny was our first choice this year," said Bayhawks Head Coach John Tucker following the selection. "He's one of the best players in the country and has a lot of different skills he can put to use right away at the next level. His brother has been a great player for us, and I know Danny is going to fit in right away."
The Bayhawks used their second first round selection to draft Abbott. Abbott is coming off a second consecutive National Championship with the Syracuse Orange. Just like Glading, Abbott is a Tewaaraton finalist. Abbott scored 12 goals and 11 assists during the 2009 championship campaign. He is a native of Syracuse, NY and played at Nottingham High School.
The Bayhawks focused on defense for their next two picks. In the second round they selected PT Ricci out of Loyola College. Ricci, the eleventh overall selection, helped lead the Loyola defense with 91 ground balls collected. The Bayhawks then selected Michael Evans with their first of three third round picks. Evans graduated from Johns Hopkins and was named the Schmeisser Award winner as the nation's top defenseman. Evans hails from Davidsonville, MD and graduated from South River High School.
The Bayhawks closed the third round with two compensatory picks and took two Maryland alums. Jeff Reynolds was selected 23rd overall. A midfielder, Reynolds is local as well, playing high school lacrosse at Calvert Hall College in Baltimore, MD. With the 26th selection, the Bayhawks drafted Dan Groot. Groot also played midfield for the Terps.
In the fourth round, the Bayhawks picked Ben Hunt with the 28th overall selection. Hunt played midfield at North Carolina. He is an Arnold, MD native and played high school lacrosse at Severna Park. With the 33rd overall pick, the Bayhawks took defenseman Ryan McFadyen. McFadyen graduated from Duke and is from Durham, NC. The Bayhawks fifth round and final pick of the draft was Kylor Berkman. Berkman played midfield at Salisbury and was named the Division III National Midfielder of the Year.
