Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA - Thursday, May 28, 2009 - The Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) selected five players, including two attackmen, two midfielders and a goalie, in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft, Cannons Vice President and General Manager Mark Kastrud announced today. The ninth annual 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft was held at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, on May 27.
With the fourth-overall selection in the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft, the Cannons selected attackman Brandon Corp from Colgate University. During his senior campaign, Corp started all 15 games for the Raiders, scoring at least one point in each of those starts to finish with a 48-game scoring streak and a 4.20 point-per-game average, good for best in the nation. The 6-0, 180-pound native of Chittenango, New York, was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 for the third straight season, leading all Patriot League players with 63 points (35-28=63). In addition, this season was the third in a row that Corp totaled at least 50 points, and the 28 assists he collected were a career best.
With the 16th overall selection in the second-round, the Cannons selected goalie Jordan Burke from Brown University. The 6-1, 190-pound native of Potomac, Maryland, was recently named the Ivy League Player of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the Bears to their first NCAA playoff appearance in 12 years, and is the first player to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons. Burke was named a finalist for both the Tewaarton Award as the National Player of the Year, and the Lowe's Senior Class Award for achievement on the field, in the classroom and in the community. A Second Team USILA All-American and the New England Player of the Year in 2008, Burke was the Ivy League leader in saves per game (12.33) and save percentage (.617), good for fifth best in the nation, during his senior season. He was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for the second time after making 18 saves, including seven in the fourth quarter, in Brown's 11-9 win over the second-ranked Cornell University.
The Cannons selected midfielder Peet Poillon with their third-round selection (20th overall) in the MLL Collegiate Draft. The 5-9, 165-pound graduate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, took part in the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game at Harvard Stadium on May 22 and was named as a Second Team USILA All-American. A native of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, Poillon led the Retrievers during his senior campaign with 47 points, scoring 26 goals and a team-best 21 assists. An America East First Team All-Conference performer, Poillon also earned Honorable Mention All-America honors after his junior season in 2008 at Ohio State University.
With their fourth-round draft pick (30th overall), the Cannons selected midfielder Matt Messina. A graduate of New York Institute of Technology, Messina was selected to the East Coast Conference All-Conference First Team. The 6-3, 210-pound native of Sayville, New York, finished second on his NYIT squad with 24 assists and third with 20 goals and 44 points. Messina also appeared in the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game at Harvard Stadium on May 22, following in the footsteps of current Cannons midfielder and NYIT graduate, Tom Zummo.
With their final pick, 40th overall in the fifth-round, the Cannons selected attackman Jake Beebe, a graduate of Springfield College and former MLL intern. A native of Sudbury, Massachusetts, Beebe represents the first player in the Pride's history to be drafted in the MLL Collegiate Draft. Beebe was named a USILA Honorable Mention All-American and was selected to play in the annual USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game. An ECAC All-Star First Team selection and the Pilgrim Lacrosse Player of the Year, Beebe turned in one of the most impressive offensive displays in program history, collecting 127 goals and 126 assists for 253 points during his four-year collegiate career.
The Cannons will return to action this weekend when they travel to Illinois to take on the Chicago Machine at Soldier Field on Saturday, May 30 at 4:00 PM (ET).
