MLL News and Notes- Week 2

Solider's Salute- The Chicago Machine will be playing its home opener in Soldier Field, the home of the Chicago Bears. This is the first time the Machine will be playing in this historic stadium.
I AM LEGEND- Lacrosse legend Gary Gait (Toronto) returned to the MLL for his first game since 2005 by scoring 2 goals against Chicago.
Sudden Death - In only the second week of the season, the MLL witnessed its first overtime game of the 2009 season between the Washington Bayhawks and the Long Island Lizards. The Bayhawks pulled out with a victory after the golden goal from Bud Light MVP Kevin Huntley.
Sibling Rivalry- Chicago's Leveille brothers combined for 10 points for the Machine this past weekend against Toronto. Big brother Kevin claimed 7 of those points while baby-brother Mike tallied the other 3 points. Look for the two brothers to battle for most points this weekend against Boston.
Man of the Century- Veteran Tim Goettelman hit his century mark, playing in his 100th game of his career. He is the first ever player in the MLL to play 100 games. Scott Urick of the Bayhawks is not far behind, as he will be reaching the same mark this coming week.
And with the first selection...- For the first selection of the 2009 Draft, the Chicago Machine picked up Kenny Nims, the outstanding attackman from Syracuse. Nims was the number 1 scorer in the NCAA for this season.
Orange Crush- Of the top 10 selections in Wednesday's draft, four came from Syracuse, the 2009 NCAA champs, including Kenny Nims to Chicago, defenseman Sid Smith (sixth overall to Toronto), midfielder Dan Hardy (eighth to Denver) and midfielder Matt Abbott (ninth to Washington).
Undefeated- Entering the third weekend of games, there is only one team to remain undefeated, the Toronto Nationals, the first Canadian team to play in the MLL. The Nationals play the Long Island Lizards this Friday.
Familiar Faces - For Springfield attackman Jake Beebe, selected with the 40th overall pick in the 5th Round by the Boston Cannons, this is a return of sorts to both the MLL and the Cannons. Beebe was a ballboy back in the Cannons first season when they played in Lowell, MA. He also interned for Major League Lacrosse during the 2008 season. Beebe joins defenseman Colin Hulme, currently a member of the Cannons practice squad, as former MLL interns who were later selected in the draft the following season.
Quiet Time - Unlike last year's MLL Collegiate draft, which saw a number of trades happen throughout the day and during the draft itself, yesterday was a pretty quiet day, with very little in the way of transactions. The only action occurred during the draft, when the Boston Cannons traded the 7th overall pick in the first round to the Denver Outlaws in exchange for Outlaws midfielder Greg Downing. The Outlaws selected Shane Walterhoefer (FO/North Carolina) with the pick.
