BayBears Take Series with Extra-Inning Victory

PEARL, MS -- For the second consecutive night and third time in five games, the Mississippi Braves and Mobile BayBears went to extra innings only to fall by one run in 10 innings. With the win, the BayBears take the series three-games-to-two.

Tom Belza reached on a pinch-hit bunt single to start the top of the 10th for the BayBears. Jake Lamb followed with a double to left field, driving home Belza and putting Mobile out front 7-6. Mississippi (14-11, 53-41) scored six runs on 10 hits while Mobile (16-9, 58-36) plated six runs on 10 hits.

Sean Jamieson doubled and moved to third on a fly out to start the top of the first. He then came in to score the game's first run on a Lamb sacrifice fly, putting the BayBears out front early.

Mississippi responded in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Wren, Matt Kennelly and Cedric Hunter walked to load the bases with one out. Kyle Kubitza later drew a two-out walk to tie the game at 1-1.

Mycal Jones singled to start the bottom of the second. Mitch Atkins laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Jones to second. Jose Peraza then followed with a single to right, plating Jones and giving the M-Braves a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Hunter walked and Kubitza doubled to right field, driving home Hunter. Daniel Castro singled to put runners at the corners before Jones' RBI-single to center field put the Braves out front 4-1.

Zach Borentstein walked and stole second to start the BayBears' fifth. A fly out allowed him to move over to third, and Steve Rodriguez delivered a RBI-single to cut the M-Braves lead to 4-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barrett Kleinknecht singled and Kubitza walked. Castro followed with a double to center, scoring Kleinknecht and making it a 5-2 game. Jones grounded out to shortstop to drive home Kubitza and extend the M-Braves lead to 6-2.

Gerson Montilla walked and Todd Glaesmann doubled to start the sixth. Borenstein then belted a three-run homer into the BayBears bullpen, cutting Mobile's lead to 6-5.

The BayBears tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the seventh. Steve Rodriguez doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Jamieson followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Rodriguez. The game remained tied until the decisive 10th frame for the second-straight night and third time in five games.

Jimmie Sherfy (2-0) worked the ninth and picked up the win for the BayBears. Chasen Shreve (3-2) came on in the 10th and surrendered the loss. Kyle Anderson (S, 1) worked the final frame for Mobile to pick up the save.

Neither starter factored in the decision. Mitch Atkins worked seven innings for the Braves. He gave up six earned runs on seven hits, a homer and two walks. He struck out two batters. Willy Paredes gave up two earned runs on two hits and four walks. He struck out one batter in two innings of work.

The M-Braves take a day off before traveling to Birmingham for a five-game series against the Barons. In game one of the series, Braves right-hander Jason Hursh (6-6, 3.88) counters Barons lefty Scott Snodgress (3-5, 3.98).
