Mobile BayBears News Release
HUNTSVILLE, AL -- The Mobile BayBears stunned the Huntsville Stars, winning 10-7 Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Down one run with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, David Peralta kept the BayBears alive and gave Mobile a 6-5 lead with a two-run double. The Stars tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the 12th, with the bases loaded, Jake Lamb connected on a pitch that he drove into deep center that would roll all the way to the wall allowing Lamb to clear the bases and cross the plate with a rare inside-the-park grand slam.
The extra inning game was the second for the BayBears in the last four days and the BayBears have won both of their extra inning contest this season. With the victory on Saturday, Mobile remains one game back of the Montgomery Biscuits for first place in the Southern League South Division Standings.
The stars struck first, scoring three runs in their first inning at bat but the BayBear bats awoke in the fourth inning with Jon Griffin leading off the frame with a double and advancing to third on a base hit from Raywilly Gomez. With Gerson Montilla batting, Griffin scored from third on a wild pitch. Montilla then drove in another run with a RBI double, plating Gomez and cutting the Stars lead to 3-2. Mike Freeman tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a solo homer to right.
The tie would not last as the Stars pulled ahead with two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to make it 5-3 but Sean Jamieson clawed the BayBears back within one on a RBI single in the sixth. The 5-4 Stars lead would hold until the top of the ninth inning with Peralta delivered the two out, two-run double.
RHP A.J. Schugel entered Saturday only allowing five hits in his previous two starts and a total of 11.2 innings of work. Schugel exited Saturday's matchup allowing five runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings, striking out five and settling for a no decision. RHP Kaleb Fleck improved to 2-0 working two scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th innings.
The BayBears (9-7) and Stars (10-6) continue the five game series with game two from Huntsville at 1 PM Sunday afternoon. RHP Chase Anderson (2-1) will take to the mound for Mobile against RHP Drew Gargnon (2-0). Mobile will return home to Hank Aaron Stadium for a five game set with the Jackson Generals starting Thursday, April 24, at 7 PM.
