Mobile BayBears News Release
PEARL, Miss. - With eight runs in the ninth inning, the BayBears ripped the Mississippi Braves on Wednesday night at Trustmark Park with a 12-3 victory as they maintain a first-place tie with Jacksonville in the South Division.
A pair of three-run homers blasted Eliecer Cardenas in the top of the ninth as Paul Goldschmidt cranked his league-leading 18th dinger of the season while Ryan Wheeler popped a three-run jack in his second pinch-hitting appearance of the inning as the BayBears (29-24) batted around against Cardenas.
A.J. Pollock and Jake Elmore also picked up an RBI in the ninth. Elmore knocked home an insurance run in the eighth inning with a two-out single that brought home Josh Ford, putting the visitors up, 4-2.
Wes Roemer (4-1) started for the BayBears and tossed 6.2 innings as he allowed just two runs on eight hits. Roemer has posted nine quality starts this year out of his 11 performances this season. He was given an early cushion as Goldschimdt singled home Pollock with one away in the first after Pollock reached on a triple. Goldschmidt scored on Taylor Harbin's RBI knock.
Mississippi (21-32) fought back with a run in the second and the third. Cory Harrilchak doubled in Ernesto Mejia to pull the Braves within one. Tyler Pastornicky busted out a solo homer in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
In the sixth, the BayBears grabbed the lead for good as Pollock walked and came home on a sac fly from Alfredo Marte against starter Brett Oberholtzer (3-5). Oberholtzer coughed up three runs on six hits in his seven innings of work.
The BayBears continue their five-game set with the Braves at Trustmark Park on Thursday night at 7:05. Right-hander Charles Brewer (3-1) counters fellow righty J.J. Hoover (2-3). The BayBears are back home on Saturday, June 4 against the Huntsville Stars at 7:05.
