Mobile BayBears News Release

Jackson, Tenn. – BayBears starter Justin Germano had one bad inning Friday night against West Tenn but that was enough as the Diamond Jaxx defeated Mobile 5-1 in their final series opener of the season.

Neither team was able to score through the first four innings. The BayBears left a runner at third base in each of the first two frames against Diamond Jaxx starter Jae-Kuk Ryu.

Germano got out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth as he induced Lukas McKnight to hit into a bases-loaded, inning-ending double play.

However, the Diamond Jaxx exploded for all five of their runs in the fifth. Five straight batters reached base against Germano in the frame and all five came around to score. The inning was capped by a three-run homerun by Jason Dubois off of the leftfield foul pole.

Germano (2-5) took the loss for Mobile as he allowed five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in seven innings.

Ryu (2-5) earned the win as he threw a complete game, six-hitter and allowed just a ninth inning run to the BayBears.

In the ninth Jake Gautreau doubled to lead off the frame and after two were retired Danny Bravo drove in the BayBears only run with a double of his own to straight away centerfield.

Mobile's Vinnie Faison was 2-for-4 in the game as he continues to finish the season strong. Faison is 13-34 (.367) over his last nine games. What does Faison see as the key to his improvement?

"Focus," Faison said. "We've only got a couple of games left and I'm just trying to simplify things at the plate. See the ball and hit it."

The BayBears and Diamond Jaxx will play game two of their series Saturday night at 7:05. Roger Deago (8-7; 4.25) will start on the mound for Mobile against West Tenn's John Koronka (7-13; 4.39).
