Stars Lose Fifth Straight, 3-0

August 29, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Huntsville Stars News Release

Chattanooga, TN – The Stars' late-August swoon continued Friday night at Bell South Park. Coming off a four-game sweep at the hands of red-hot Birmingham, Huntsville dropped its fifth straight game, 3-0, to the Chattanooga Lookouts. The Stars (33-34, 73-62) have lost nine of 10 to fall under .500 for the first time since they were 5-6 back on April 14.

Chattanooga righty Daylan Childress proffered his best outing of the season, tossing a season-high eight innings and shutting out Huntsville on just four hits for his second win. Childress (2-4) walked only two and struck out eight, also a season-high. Childress faced his toughest jam with runners at second and third in the sixth. He fanned J.J. Hardy with a high fastball and retired Corey Hart on a foul pop to first.

The Lookouts took a first-inning lead on Dionys Cesar's run-scoring single, then Hart's error at third opened the door for an unearned run in the sixth, when Jessie Gutierrez drove in Edwin Encarnacion with a two-out single. Jason Dellaero launched a seventh-inning leadoff homer for a 3-0 lead.

Ben Hendrickson (7-6) suffered the loss despite throwing six solid innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and no walks with one strikeout. Brett Gray recorded his first save for the Lookouts, giving up one hit in a scoreless ninth.

Huntsville sends righty Greg Bruso (0-1, 4.50) against Chattanooga right-hander Josh Hall (8-9,3.26) in game two Saturday night. Game time is 6:15 p.m. CT. The Bill Penney Toyota Pre-game Show starts at 6:00 p.m. CT. Stars baseball can be heard on Jammin' 1550 WLOR, ESPN 1450 WTKI and at www.huntsvillestars.com.
