BayBears Edge Smokies for Third Straight

Mobile, AL - The Mobile BayBears defeated the Tennessee Smokies 3-2 Thursday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. The one-run win was Mobile's third straight victory and fourth win in the last five games. The BayBears offense scored first, but the Smokies tied the game at two in the fourth inning. BayBear left fielder Marc Krauss broke the 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the BayBear bullpen held the Smokies scoreless over the final five frames to preserve the win.

Mobile's first run came off the bat of Alfredo Marte, who delivered a RBI single in the bottom of first inning that plated David Nick. The Smokies responded with a run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at one. Krauss put the BayBears back in front with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. Tennessee tied the game again in the top of the fourth to make it 2-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Krauss struck his eighth home run of the year to reclaim the BayBear lead, 3-2.

Right-handed pitcher Derek Eitel earned his fourth win of the year, pitching six innings allowing just two earned runs on six hits. The BayBear bullpen backed Eitel's outing with three scoreless innings from Conrad Fylnn, Eury De La Rose and Matt Gorgen. With two outs and two on in the top of the ninth inning, Gorgen recorded his fourth save of the season when he struck out Michael Brenly to end the game.

The Smokies and BayBears resume the five game series when they meet Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
