Mobile BayBears News Release
PEARL, Miss. - After mustering up just 13 runs in their first five games, the BayBears' offense exploded for 10 runs on 17 hits in last night's victory over the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. It was a rude home opener for the Braves (0-6), who started the season by getting swept in Huntsville and losing their top player, Jordan Schafer, for 50 games due to a violation of baseball's performance enhancing drug policy.
Rusty Ryal's infield single with two outs in the first inning allowed Yunesky Sanchez to score which gave the BayBears (3-3) the early lead. In the second, Cyle Hankerd went yard for Mobile's first home run this season, on a blast that cleared the left-center field wall and entered the Mississippi bullpen.
Soon after, the Mississippi bullpen would enter the ballgame as starter Dan Smith (0-2) only lasted three innings while giving up three runs on six hits. BayBears starter Brooks Brown (1-1) was solid while protecting the lead for six innings. Brown's only mistake was a two-out RBI double he allowed to Van Pope in the fourth inning.
The BayBears busted the game open in the seventh with five runs, all with two outs. Orlando Mercado knocked home Ryal with his first base hit of the season. Hankerd scored on a single off the bat of pinch-hitter Brandon Burgess. A base hit by Greg Thomson plated another run while a throwing error by reliever Luis Valdez, allowed the final two tallies to come in. A two-run triple by Sanchez finished the scoring in the ninth.
