Bay FC News Release
San Francisco - Bay FC, the Bay Area's new women's professional soccer franchise in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), announced it has set a Bay Area women's professional soccer record by selling out the team's inaugural home opener which took place this evening, March 30, 2024 at PayPal Park in San Jose, California with a crowd of 18,000.
The sellout marks the largest stand-alone women's professional soccer crowd in Bay Area history with the previous record-setting attendance on July 16, 2001 with 16,174 fans when the Bay Area CyberRays (later the San Jose CyberRays) hosted the Washington Freedom in a regular-season match. Bay FC Co-owner and U.S. Women's National Team Legend Brandi Chastain was home captain for the match.
"Selling out our home opener is another testament to the unparalleled momentum women's sports is experiencing," said Bay FC Chief Executive Officer Brady Stewart. "We cannot thank our fans, partners, and entire Bay Area community enough for the warm embrace we have received and look forward to continuing to make history with this club."
Other Bay Area women's soccer notable milestones include:
This match marks the first time a women's professional soccer team has played a home game in the Bay Area since September 26, 2010 when FC Gold Pride faced Philadelphia Independence in the WPS final. The game was played at Pioneer Stadium in Hayward.
The last time a women's professional soccer team played an official game "on the Peninsula" was August 9, 2009 when FC Gold Pride hosted St. Louis Athletica at Buck Shaw Stadium. Both Bay FC Co-founders and U.S. Women's National Team legends Brandi Chastain and Leslie Osborne started the match.
