Battle Creek streak hits three

Battle Creek, MI- The Battle Creek Yankees extended their win streak to three games with a 9-6 win over the Peoria Chiefs in Midwest League action Sunday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. Nick Walsh was 4-for-4 and Willie Vasquez drove in two runs to lead the Yankees.

After Peoria took a 1-0 in the top of the second, Battle Creek pushed three runs across for a 3-1 lead. Vasquez and Jason VanMeetren each scored on wild pitches and Walsh added an RBI-double.

Peoria tied the game in the top of the third with two runs on three hits. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Battle Creek scored four runs on two hits and one costly Peoria error. The Yankees first run came on a bases-loaded walk by Vasquez. The next three runs scored when Peoria pitcher Justin Brown overthrew first base allowing all three runners to come around and score. At that point the Yankees led 7-3.

Peoria added three runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 7-6, but Battle Creek added two more in the bottom half to make it 9-6. Vasquez drew his second bases-loaded walk of the night and Enrique Cruz added a sacrifice fly.

Yankees¹ starter Chase Wright went five innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, but did not factor in the decision. Ben Moore (1-1) pitched two innings of relief allowing only one hit to pick up the win. Paul Thorp pitched the ninth, striking out the final two batters with the bases loaded to pick up his 15th save of the season.

The win raises Battle Creek¹s record to 5-6 for the second half and 38-42 overall.

The second game of the four-game series will pit Brandon Harmsen against Cristobal Correa. First pitch on Monday night is scheduled for 7.
