Battery's Valencia Named to Team of the Week

Charleston, SC - Charleston Battery striker Gabe Valencia has been named to the A-League Team of the Week following his two goal performance last Thursday versus the Toronto Lynx. Valencia's first-half brace led the Battery to its first A-League win since May 11. The goals were Valencia's first in a Battery uniform.

Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Valencia is a Venezuelan national; he attended William & Mary before leaving in 1997 to play for Enebyperg of the Swedish 2nd Division.

Valencia returned to the US in 1999 for a season with the Hampton Roads Mariners then spent two years with FC Sachsen-Leipzig of the German third division.

In 2001Valencia returned to the US once more enjoying spells at the Nashville Metros, MLS's Metrostars and the Syracuse Salty Dogs. Valencia was traded to the Rochester Raging Rhinos late in 2003 but missed the playoffs through injury.

Charleston Battery vs Sunderland AFC - July 17

The Charleston Battery will play English First Division side, Sunderland AFC this Saturday, July 17 at Blackbaud Stadium in an international exhibition match; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. This will be the first game the Battery has played against an English Pro Club.

Founded in 1879, Sunderland is one of the most successful sides in English soccer. Sunderland has won eight English Championships and two FA Cup Championships. In 2004 Sunderland advanced to the semifinal stage of the FA Cup before losing to Millwall.

The July 17 match versus Sunderland is included in the Battery's 2004 season ticket package. Individual tickets are also available priced at $15 - $20.
