WAVE UNITED (5-7-2, 17 PTS.) V. MUSTANGS (2-8-3, 9 PTS) GAME #15 / HOME GAME #9
BROADCAST: 540 AM, WRRD ("The Word")
Wave United Update: Milwaukee enters tonight's contest with a record of 4-2-2 home / 1-5-0 road / 5-7-2 overall (17 points) following last Friday's (7/9) 2-1 win over the Virginia Beach Mariners here at Uihlein. Greg Howes' goal in the 75th minute broke a 1-1 tie as Wave United extended its team record unbeaten streak to five consecutive games (4-0-1). Coach Art Kramer's team is now fifth in the A-League's Western Conference standings, seven points behind the fourth place Seattle Sounders (7-8-3, 24 points), who currently hold the final playoff spot in the conference.*
*The top four teams in both the Eastern and Western Conferences will qualify for the 2004 A-League Playoffs in beginning in September.
Tonight's meeting is the first ever between Wave United and the Mustangs although not the first between Milwaukee and Calgary. The now-defunct Rampage won a pair of games from old Calgary Storm in 2002 (1-0 @ Cal on 5/18/02 and 2-0 @ Mil on 6/2/02) while Wave United defeated Team Calgary 2-1 last season on 8/9/03 @ Cal. Tonight's game is also the first of four meetings between the clubs this season. The Mustangs have been idle since 6/28, when Coach Thomas Niendorf's club suffered a 1-0 loss to the arch-rival Aviators in Edmonton. Calgary is also looking for its first road win of the campaign (0-6-0), which it hopes to attain either tonight, or tomorrow night (7/15) at Minnesota.
Wave United wraps up the current home stand this Saturday night, July 17, 7:35 PM when it hosts the Edmonton Aviators here at Uihlein Soccer Park. Among the festivities on Saturday night will be post-game fireworks sponsored by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Saturday's game will also be the first of back-to-back games between Wave United and the Aviators, with Milwaukee traveling to Edmonton to kick-off a "three-in-four" road trip next Thursday night (7/22, 8:05 PM) at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, AB. Milwaukee will also visit Vancouver (Friday, July 23, 9:05 PM) and Seattle (Sunday, July 25, 7:05 PM) before returning home to face the Portland Timbers on Saturday, July 31 in a 7:35 PM match here at Uihlein.
Tickets for all home games ($12 adult, $8 children under 12) are available at the Wave / Wave United Office, 510 W. Kilbourn Ave, Suite B (414-224-WAVE), the Uihlein Soccer Park Ticket Office (7101 W. Good Hope Rd.), all TicketMaster outlets, or by phone charge at 414-276-4545. Forward Greg Howes scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute to spark Wave United to a 2-1 victory over the Virginia Beach Mariners Friday night (7/9) at Uihlein Soccer Park. The win improved Milwaukee's record to 5-7-2 (17 points) while Virginia Beach fell to 6-8-3 (21 points). The Wave United victory also enabled Coach Art Kramer's team to extend its club record unbeaten streak to five straight games (4-0-1) as Milwaukee gained a split in the season series with Virginia Beach, which saw its own two-game winning streak come to an end.
Wave United got on the board first when Johnny Torres scored his sixth of the season in the 14th minute. Torres, while laying on the ground in the middle of the penalty area, was able to nudge the ball past Mariners' goalkeeper Matt Nelson after taking a touch from Todd Dusosky. Virginia Beach evened the count in the 31st minute when Hamisi Amani-Dove tallied his third goal of the campaign from 14 yards away after taking a pass from Jose Gomez.
The game-winning play developed when second-half substitute Digital Takawira chipped the ball to Howes at the top of the box. After flicking it to the right to get around his defender, Howes then banged home his fourth goal of the season from 15 yards out past a diving Nelson. Wave United withstood some intense pressure from the Mariners in the last few minutes, including a curling shot by Kevin Knott at the top of the penalty area that was batted away by Milwaukee 'keeper Jim Larkin in the 89th minute. Larkin (5-6-2) finished the night with two saves while Nelson (6-7-2) registered three.

Wave United Notes:
*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton which was postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283) for more information.
*Wave United's 2-1 win v. Por on 6/23 was Milwaukee's first this season when allowing the initial score. Wave United is now 1-4-1 when the opponent scores first after going 1-8-0 in similar circumstances last season.
*The five goals surrendered by Milwaukee in the 5-2 loss @ VB on 6/18 were the most yielded by a Wave United team, and the most given up by a Milwaukee A-League squad since the Rampage dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland on 8/30/01.
*Wave United has trailed just once at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13) so far this season. However, Milwaukee has been outscored 16-8 after halftime and has blown three-of-its four halftime advantages.
*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/25 v. Min was the 26th of his A-League career, and the 10th in his two years with Wave United.
*Johnny Torres' goal on 7/9 v. VB was his team-leading sixth this season, and the 25th of his three-year A-League career.
*Greg Howes' goal (GWG) on 7/9 v. VB was his fourth this season, and the 44th of his five-year A-League career.
*Digital Takawira's assist on 7/9 v. VB was his first point of the season, and the 115th (44 goals, 27 assists) of his five-year A-League career.
*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.
*The scoreless draw on 5/22 v. Min was also the first tie in Wave United history. Milwaukee did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just three minutes of overtime during the regular season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.
*In stark contrast to last season, Wave United has now played six overtime matches this season. Milwaukee has played 92 combined overtime minutes and is 2-2-2 in such contests.
*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup.
*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.
