July 14, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

The Whitecaps Men extended their Western Conference lead to five points, thanks to a 2-0 win away to the Edmonton Aviators on Tuesday. Striker Davide Xausa continued his strong play, scoring both goals, giving him a team-leading six on the season, and four in as many games. Goalkeeper Alex Marques earned his third straight shutout, and sixth on the season, making five saves. Both teams had chances in an evenly played game, but Vancouver were able to capitalise on their chances, while Edmonton who out-shot their guests 5-4, did not.

Vancouver's record improves to 10-5-2, as the Caps lead the 9-5-0 Portland Timbers and 8-4-3 Minnesota Thunder by five points, though both those teams have games in hand.

The Whitecaps can extend their lead in their next game, on Friday, July 16 when they host Portland in a table-topping showdown at Swangard Stadium, starting at 7:00pm.

Game Notes

Xausa leads the Whitecaps this season with three game winning goals, and his six goals and one assist put him in 12th place in league scoring.

Edmonton's record drops to 2-7-6.

The win moves Vancouver into second place in the Voyageurs Cup competition, a fan-sponsored trophy contested by the five Canadian A-League teams using interlocking regular season games to form a double-round robin. Vancouver's record in the competition goes to 2-0-3 for 6 points, while the Montreal Impact hold top spot at 3-2-0 for 11 points. The Voyageurs are Canada's national soccer supporters club.
