Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery defeated the Toronto Lynx by a score of three goals to one tonight at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,557. It was the final game of the A-League season; Charleston finishes with a record of 7-15-6 27 points, 8th position in the Eastern Conference. Toronto finishes its campaign with a record of 9-16-1, 28 points, good for 7th position in the Conference. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday but was postponed for a day due to tropical storm Gaston.
Charleston started brightly and forward Greg Simmonds came close to opening the scoring in the 7th minute. Midfielder Ted Chronopoulos played the ball across to Simmonds from the right touch-line. Simmonds controlled with his chest but his volley looped over the bar.
In the 13th minute Toronto forward Charles Gbeke saw a firm header glance off the far post after he met a fine cross from defender Lewis Blois. The Battery were quickest to the loose ball and scrambled it away to safety.
Three minutes later Charleston took the lead. Defender Rick Titus played a neat ball in behind the defense to Simmonds who crossed it to Chronopoulos at the far-post. Chronopoulos controlled the ball with a good first touch then fired a shot past goalkeeper Bryheem Hancock and into the goal.
The Battery doubled its lead midway through the first-half. Again Simmonds provide the goal, this time crossing to the near-post. Forward Gabe Valencia beat his defender to the ball and scored with a touch-finish.
The Lynx fought back after half-time, scoring in the 52nd minute. Gbeke ran onto a forward ball midway inside the Battery half. He powered past a Battery defender then hit a hard dipping shot that goalkeeper Chris Doyle could not quite reach.
The Battery finished off the scoring in the 67th minute. Chronopoulos whipped a cross in from close to the corner-flag on the right-hand side. Substitute midfielder Chris Goos controlled the ball then struck a half-volley that squirted under Hancock into the back of the net.
