Battery to play Jamaica's Village United Saturday at Blackbaud

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery face the Jamaican Premier League's Village United in a special International Soccer Exhibition Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium; gates open at 6:30 PM with kick off set for 7:30 PM. This is the second consecutive year the two clubs have met. The Battery won the first meeting at Blackbaud Stadium 2-1. Village United finished seventh in the 2006-07 Wray & Nephew Premier League 12-team table.

Village United's roster includes Christopher Dawes and Theodore Whitmore, who both were on the Reggae Boys 1998 World Cup side, and also includes current Jamaica National Team members William Wilson, Kirk Hendricks, and Jeff Pearce.

Village United also features Newton Sterling, who played for the Battery during the Carolina Challenge Cup, scoring the tying goal in the Battery's 1-1 draw versus Houston. Shane Crawford, who played for the Battery in 2006, is the second former Battery player with United.

Village United were in attendance Thursday night for the Battery's 2-1 loss to Seattle.

US Open Cup First Round

Tuesday Night (June 12) the Battery begins its quest for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a first round fixture versus the PDL Central Florida Kraze. Based in Winter Park, Florida, the amateur side is currently in second place in the Southeast Division going 4-1-0 so far this season.

Last year, the Battery advanced to the fourth round of tournament before falling to MLS' F.C. Dallas on penalty kick after playing to a 3-3 draw at Blackbaud Stadium. Kickoff is at 7:30p.m. Tickets are $10, $5 for season ticket holders.
