Battery to battle Rhinos Sunday at Blackbaud
September 8, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery closes out the regular season on Sunday at Blackbaud Stadium with a 6 PM fixture versus the powerhouse Rochester Raging Rhinos. Depending on the result from Rochester's Saturday night game with Minnesota the match could decide which team earns a bye through to the semi-final round of the post-season.
The Battery has clinched a berth in the playoffs and is currently in third position (13-8-6, 45 points) one spot behind the Rhinos (12-4-10, 46 points); the top two sides receive a bye through the first round; the Montreal Impact have clinched the first playoff bye.
This is the second game of the season between Charleston and Rochester; the Battery defeated the Rhinos by a score of two goals to one in Rochester on July 8. Ben Hollingsworth and Gavin Glinton tallied for Charleston before former Charleston midfielder John Ball pulled back a late goal for Rochester.
The Battery enters the game on a four match unbeaten streak. Charleston tied Vancouver 1-1, defeated Seattle 2-1 and Portland 1-0 in games played on the road last weekend. The Battery also defeated the Montreal Impact in its previous league fixture in Montreal on August 16.
Rochester plays the Minnesota Thunder at home on Saturday night; a win would guarantee the Rhinos a first round playoff bye. However if Rochester tie or lose to Minnesota then the Battery could pass Rochester in the standing and claim the bye.
The Charleston Battery roster contains two former Rhinos; forward Ian Fuller and goalkeeper Dusty Hudock both played for Rochester in 2005.
Glinton and Daley rejoin Battery squad
Forward Gavin Glinton and midfielder Omar Daley have both rejoined the Charleston Battery squad after serving international duty with their respective national teams this past week. Glinton scored three goals and led the Turks and Caicos to its first ever international victory during three Gold Cup qualification matches in Cuba, Daley came on as a second half substitute in Jamaica's 1-0 loss to Canada.
