Charleston Battery News Release

CHARLESTON -- Chris Tsonis, a forward who played professionally in Iceland before returning to the United States for his USL debut with New York Red Bulls II in 2015, was cleared by USL Saturday after signing with the Charleston Battery.

Per club policy, contract details remain private.

Tsonis traveled with the team on its trip to Pennsylvania to face Bethlehem Steel FC Sunday at 3 p.m. He will be available for selection as a substitute.

After a standout career at Southern New Hampshire University, Tsonis proved himself in 2013 at Tindastol, in Iceland's lower division, prompting a transfer to top-division Fjolnir Reykjavík in 2015. The Massachusetts native made 26 appearances for NYRBII last season and finished second on the team in goals (five) and assists (three).

Tsonis joined the Battery early in the 2016 preseason, advancing from the early trials through the combine and then through camp. He was one of the most productive players on the camp roster, scoring in multiple games. Tsonis closed out the scrimmage preseason by assisting Forrest Lasso on the match-winner against Clemson.

Though not signed for the season opener, Tsonis continued to train with the club for several weeks.
