Charleston Battery News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Sitting in eighth place in the league table, the Battery entered Tuesday night's game at Blackbaud Stadium versus the Carolina Railhawks with a tenuous hold on the final playoff spot, and in need of a good result before four straight games on the road. They didn't get it, falling to the Railhawks 3-0.
The Battery played without Byron Alvarez for the second straight game due to yellow card accumulation suspension. The Railhawks Connaly Edozien scored all three goals for the Railhawks.
With the win, the expansion Railhawks also claimed the Southern Derby still with one gave to play in the three team home-and-away series. The Battery went winless in the series.
The game took an early downhill turn when Edozien put the Railhawks up in just the sixth minute of play. Edozien was given time inside the Battery penalty area and slammed the ball to the far post after a controlling touch, leaving Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock helpless.
Following the goal, the game became a scrappy affair while both teams fought to gain control of the game. Both teams did manage to maintain control of the ball for but it was the Railhawks that proved to me more dangerous, testing Hudock several times.
Stephen Armstrong provided the Battery with the best chance of the first half with a lofted ball from the right-hand corner of the penalty box to the far corner, missing high by inches.
The Railhawks Edozien put his second of the night on the board in the 41st minute against the run of play. The Railhawks Chris Carrieri ran onto a ball played from the back and knifed a pass to Phillip Long inside the Battery penalty to Phillip Long, who found Edozien with a heel-flick. Again, Edozien had little trouble beating a stranded Hudock.
Entering the second half, the Battery gave a glimpse of a comeback after Armstrong missed a 20-yard free kick to the far post again by inches in the 53rd minute.
Edozien put the game out of reach in the 66th minute out-jumping the Battery defenders, heading home a Kupono Low corner kick.
And it could have been worse. Hudock made a desperate save on a Low free kick from 25 yards, diving to his right to stop the hemorrhaging.
The Battery fought to claw their way back in the waning moments of the game; Armondo Romero was denied by Railhawk goalkeeper Chris McClellan on a long drive, and moments later Aaron King put a volley wide from the penalty spot.
The Battery travel for three games in the Pacific Northwest starting with Portland on August 23, and do not return home until the season finale versus Puerto Rico September.
