Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC - The Charleston Battery heads to Virginia Beach Friday for an 8:00 PM match versus the Virginia Beach Mariners (FOX Sports World / Newsradio 730 WSC / www.charlestonbattery.com). Both teams return to Charleston Sunday for the second match of the series at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 6:00 PM. The Battery and the Mariners have played twice so far this year with both Clubs posting a win. The Battery defeated Virginia Beach 4-3 at home on May 11 then lost 2-0 on June 22 in Virginia Beach.

The Mariners are coached by Shawn McDonald who is in his seventh season with the Club. McDonald's six-year Mariners regular season record is 78-70-10 with a 10-9 postseason mark.

The Mariners offense is once again led by former MLS forward Dante Washington. Washington is second in the A-League in scoring with 16 goals including one Wednesday night in the 2-1 loss to Toronto and two during the Mariners 3-1 win over Atlanta last weekend. Washington scored 18 goals with an assist in 2003 and was named to the All A-League First Team.

The Mariners are still in the playoff hunt with a record of 11-10-3, 36 points, good for 6th position in the Eastern Conference. The top four teams advance to the post-season. The Battery is eliminated from playoff contention
