Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA â (Wednesday, June 9, 2004) â The Richmond Kickers (5-3-3, 18 points) look to avenge their 2004 season opening loss, taking on the Charleston Battery (2-4-3, 9 points) for the third of four regular season matches on Saturday, June 12, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium. The Kickers last met the Battery in Charleston earlier this season where the teams came away with a 1-1 draw.
Charleston, currently tied for sixth place in the Eastern Conference, is winless in their last four games (0-2-2); suffering back-to-back losses in the past two matches versus Atlanta and Portland. The Kickers surrendered their first loss on the road to first ranked, undefeated Montreal this past weekend after a triumphant return from Virginia Beach the week before.
"After a tough Montreal loss on the road, it is going to be a battle against Charleston," says Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "We have not beat Charleston yet this year and are looking to set that record straight this Saturday."
In other news, Kickers midfielder, Mike Burke has been chosen to the roster for the second US Representative XI versus England National Game XI match, which takes place tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Charleston's Blackbaud Stadium. The game will feature USL standouts from the A-League and Pro Soccer League (PSL), who will represent the United States versus the English Nationwide Conference All-Stars. Joining Burke on the roster is Charlotte's Dustin Swinehart. Swinehart scored the Kickers game-winning goal against Virginia Beach on loan from the Eagles on May 29th. Anchoring the midfield is ex-Kicker Marco Ferruzzi of the Minnesota Thunder.
